Shadows Over Thanjavur
While Arulmozhi Varman was conquering Lanka, back in Thanjavur, the political air grew heavy. With Aditya Karikalan’s death still a mystery, whispers moved through the palace corridors like ghosts. The question on every noble’s lips was:
“Who will wear the Chola crown?”
Uttama Chola ruled with grace, but the people’s hearts had begun to look east — toward Lanka, toward the young prince who won wars not just with swords, but with compassion.
The Council in Conflict
In the royal council, voices clashed. Some favored the senior lineage of Uttama Chola. Others believed destiny itself had chosen Arulmozhi.
Sembiyan Mahadevi, the queen mother, remained silent. Her silence, like a temple bell unstruck, echoed louder than any words.
“Let Dharma decide,” she finally said.
Return of the Hero
When Arulmozhi returned to Thanjavur, the streets trembled with joy. Flowers rained from terraces, and drums of victory shook the very soil. But inside the palace, the weight of responsibility pressed hard.
He did not seek the crown.
He sought only peace, and the betterment of his people.
But fate is relentless.
The moment he stepped into the inner chambers, his uncle, Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, stood before him and said:
“The tiger flag needs a new wind. That wind is you.”
Inner Turmoil
Despite the people’s love, Arulmozhi hesitated. Was he ready to rule a vast empire? Could he rise above politics, treachery, and ego?
He spent nights in meditation and prayer at the Peruvudaiyar Temple, seeking not just divine will, but strength.
“Let my rule be one that echoes through time,” he whispered before the deity.
A Decision Born of Fire
At last, a coronation was announced. But it wasn’t just a ritual — it was a turning point in Tamil history.
Clad in white silk and golden armor, Arulmozhi Varman was crowned Raja Raja Chola I, the emperor who would change the very face of South India.
The crowd chanted:
“Long live Raja Raja Chola! The crown of the Cholas, the roar of Tamilakam!”
